Tele Novella and Sol Orchid

  • Thursday, December 1, 2016, 9 p.m.
  • Blonde Bar, 1808 W. Washington Street, San Diego
  • 21+

Whether you like the Austin indie act’s ’60s girl-group side or the “macabre pop” their publicist digs, you can’t help but admire their dedication to form, releasing records on cassette and 45. Reader writer Dave Good asserts, “It’s worth the step backward in technology to hear that tight old reverb and twang.” Tele Novella takes the stage at Blonde Bar in Mission Hills on Thursday after San Diego’s own Sol Orchid and Summer Knowledge.

Past Event

Past Event

Dixon Lake Trout Derby

  • Friday, December 2, 2016, 6 a.m.
  • Dixon Lake, 1700 North La Honda Drive, Escondido
  • $5 - $7

Trout fishing in Southern California has for some time been a put-and-take event. The trout caught in all of our lakes and rivers have been farm-raised and planted for the anglers to take, per possession limits and a valid license. Some of the trout planted are much larger than any native species of Salmonidae that existed before the modern era of California’s fresh water fisheries — in April, angler Sean Sanders caught a 12 lb., 12 oz. Chaulk Mound–stocked Nebraska Tailwalker. From December 2 to 4, the 38th Annual Dixon Lake Trout Derby takes place, a week after two plants totaling 6000 pounds of trout are dropped into the small 72-acre lake.

Past Event

Helmet and Local H

  • Friday, December 2, 2016, 8 p.m.
  • Casbah, 2501 Kettner Boulevard, San Diego
  • 21+ / $20 - $24

For more than 25 years, Page Hamilton’s New York City–based nu-metal band has been churning out some of the most technical yet seamless heavy rock around. This year’s Dead to the World album shows the guitar great has a melodic side, revisiting the psych-and-jazz song style of his 1994 high-water mark, Betty. Helmet’s “Dead to the World Tour” stops at Casbah Friday night, after Chicago grunge duo Local H sets the stage.

Carols and Barrels: A Holiday Beer and Wine Festival

A holiday-themed afternoon of unlimited craft beer and wine samples and small bites from 60 breweries, wineries, and restaurants. Plus an ugly-sweater contest, photo opportunities with Santa, caroling, elves, and reindeer games (we don’t know what that last one entails). $35 designated driver, $45 general admission, $75 for VIP entry.

Past Event

Amy Schumer

You may know her from her show Inside Amy Schumer on Comedy Central. Or her 2015 movie Trainwreck with Bill Hader. Last year she also released a one-hour HBO comedy special, Amy Schumer: Live at the Apollo, and her first book, The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, came out this summer. Now she’s touring to sold-out shows around the world.

Past Event

Garden of Lights

Starting the evening of December 3, the San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas will have more than 175,000 sparkling lights illuminating the flora of the 37-acre urban oasis, including the Lawn Garden, Tropical Rainforest, Waterfall Deck, Undersea Succulent Garden, Eucalyptus Grove, Seeds of Wonder (children’s area), and Bamboo Garden, containing the nation’s largest collection of bamboo. Entertainment changes nightly, including marshmallow roasting, holiday carolers, and puppet shows. Runs December 3 to 23 and 26 to 30.

Past Event

Vista Christmas Parade

Over 80 parade entries include marching bands, equestrian teams, Star Wars characters, team mascots, community groups, and Santa himself. The 10News morning-show team serves as grand marshal. Announcers will be at three spots on the parade route: on Main Street in front of Crozier’s Flowers, S. Santa Fe Drive in front of Pepper Tree Frosty, and Main Street in front of Cinepolis.

Past Event

Rawhide Country Christmas

  • Saturday, December 3, 2016, 3 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Rawhide Ranch, 6987 W. Lilac Road, Bonsall
  • $10

Rawhide Ranch is a 40-acre working ranch and camp in the hills of Bonsall. “Come for a few hours, or stay all day.” Activities include pony and hay rides, a petting zoo, horse-vaulting exhibitions, arts and crafts fair, carolers, a live band, Christmas carols around a campfire, and a BBQ dinner. $10 entrance/parking fee (food and some activities extra, but plenty of free things to do and see). Also on Sunday.

Past Event

Little Italy Tree Lighting & Christmas Village

  • Saturday, December 3, 2016, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Piazza Basilone, India Street at Fir Street, San Diego
  • Free

A Christmas village with seasonal vendors, festive decor, live music and entertainment, and holiday treats. To kick off the night, Santa Claus will ride in on Little Italy Fire Engine 3 for meet-and-greets and photos. This year, India Street will be closed down for the first time for two tree lightings — there’s a 25-foot tower of over 1000 poinsettias in the center of Piazza Basilone and a new tree, brought to the neighborhood by H.G. Fenton, in front of what’s going to be the new heart of Little Italy, Piazza della Famiglia. The tree-lighting ceremonies begin at 5:30 p.m. at Fir and India and then move down to India and Date.

Past Event

Frankie & the Witch Fingers

  • Wednesday, December 7, 2016, 8 p.m.
  • Whistle Stop Bar, 2236 Fern Street, San Diego
  • 21+ / Free

Consequence of Sound rightly calls the L.A. band “a swift kick in the ass for garage-psych,” making this year’s Permanent Record Heavy Roller an absolute beat down, “with the raucousness of the Flamin’ Groovies and the organized chaos of Captain Beefheart.” Fans of the Nuggets brand can get their vintage on at Whistle Stop on Wednesday.
