...and the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this week

Brick by Brick stages the hard-rocking Canada band Voivod on Wednesday.

Italian glam-pop band Giuda sets up at Soda Bar on Sunday!

Sunday 29
Often referred to as a “junk-shop glam” band, but never dismissively, the rockers-from-Rome, Giuda, are touring behind last year’s Speaks Evil, a collection that finds the five-piece borrowing from Brit-punk as well as ’70s glam and landing somewhere between the Sweet and Cheap Trick! Giuda (pronounced Judah) take the stage at Soda Bar on Sunday after Residuels and Santa Ana Knights. Read Dave Good’s breakdown of the show in this week’s Of Note.... Tucson-via-Portland’s Ohioan headlines sets by locals Nothingful and Fictitious Dishes to fill this weekend’s sleeper bill at Tower Bar. According to the Tucson Weekly re Ohioan’s new record Empty/Every MT, “There’s dust on the record’s breath, and its sonic qualities draw lines between the Sonoran and Saharan desert, merging cow-punk twang to Tuareg guitar drones.” Listening as I type, and there is/it does.... Otherwise: the folk-pop singer/songwriter/gingerhead Brett Dennen plays Belly Up behind his brand-spanking new deal, Por Favor...while electro-pop producer Jonatahn Bates, aka Big Black Delta, plugs in at Casbah with this year’s Trágame Tierra after L.A. psych-pop band James Supercave.

The Soda stages punk-rawk Seattle act the Briefs on Tuesday!

Monday 30
Memorial Day night finds the Office’s Undercover crew memorializing Lou Reed and his ever-influential Velvet Underground...right around the bend at Observatory North Park, Brooklyn hip-hop MC and former Wu-Tanger GZA will spit his platinum hit Liquid Swords in its entirety — that one’s just five bucks...and up in Solana Beach, Swedish post-core quartet Refused and garage-punk Atlanta band the Coathangers split a bill at Belly Up.

Tuesday 31
Punk-rawk Seattle act the Briefs headline sets at Soda Bar on Tuesday after locals the Widows and Dead on the Wire. According to the Soda site: “The 15-year-old mall hottie is a fan [of the Briefs], but so is the 40-year-old stalwart with the pristine Undertones collection.” According to the Briefs: “Pogo, you fuckers”.... Else on Tuesday: Chicago indie-pop band the Hush Sound hits Casbah after My Body Sings Electric...while Leon Russell, rocking a 60-year career in country and blues, takes the stage at Belly Up.

MoBo Emo — Philly boys Modern Baseball hit House of Blues with their brand of emo on Wednesday!

Wednesday 1
Heavy-metal Canada band Voivod stacks ’em at Brick by Brick Wednesday night. This is the quartet’s 34th anniversary tour, dubbed “Post Society,” in reference to a soon-to-be-released EP, which features a Hawkwind cover — perhaps a clue as to where the “experimetal” band’s collective head is at this time around the globe. Voivod’s touring with Australia’s punk-metal King Parrot and Detroit art-punk four-piece Child Bite.... The Philly-based fourth-wave emo band Modern Baseball, known to its fans as “MoBo,” last week released their most ambitious and critically acclaimed record yet, Holy Ghost, punching up emo themes with intelligent lyrical turns and crafty melodicism. The tastemakers at Pitchfork say the four-piece possesses “undeniable sonic ambition and a social conscience.” There may be hope for emo yet. Modern Baseball will conjure Holy Ghost at House of Blues after likeminded Los Angelenos Joyce Manor.... Best of the rest: Latin Grammy winner Diamante Eléctrico joins locals Falling Doves and Madly to fill an alt-rock bill at Casbah...while Illinoisemakers Local H, touring on the 20-year anniversary of their grunge-rock hit record As Good as Dead — which they will play front to back — take the Belly Up stage.
