I know when it’s my turn

Sixteen-year-old Julie Schuman, a Cardiff native, ranks among the top three spots in the lady longboarders 18-and-under-category. She has been surfing since she was six years old.

“There were always a bunch of kids out surfing. Not all of them stuck with it. I did.”

Schuman admits that stand-up paddleboarders can be tiresome due to their tendency to drop in on other people’s waves.

“I know what the rules are out there,” Schuman says. “I don’t get yelled at in the water because I’m not going to try to drop in on someone. I know when it is my turn, but I will definitely go and drop in on somebody if they think they can take every wave out there.”
