Victor Mature recites Hamlet’s famous speech

The Guardian said of Cry of the City (USA),1948, 20th Century Fox), “The German-born Robert Siodmak brings a fascinatingly Italianate, neorealist touch to this hardboiled noir thriller from 1948.” The film has a great lineup of characters: a likeable sociopathic criminal; a sincere detective (played by my dad); a brassy ex-girlfriend; an innocent beauty; an unlicensed immigrant doctor; a conniving shyster; an old-world Italian mother and father; and a zaftig 6’2” masseuse. This is a gritty and straightforward film noir, full of sadness and suspense. Available on YouTube and DVD.

My Darling Clementine (USA, 1946, The Criterion Collection) serves up John Ford, Tombstone, Wyatt Earp, Doc Holliday, the Clantons, and the O.K. Corral. Small moments take on great importance in this beautifully crafted western shot on location in Monument Valley.
