Mudcrutch, Schizos, and Conchords

...plus the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this weekend

Tom Petty and his pre-Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, take the stage at Humphrey's by the Bay on Thursday!
Tom Petty and his pre-Heartbreakers, Mudcrutch, take the stage at Humphrey's by the Bay on Thursday!
Beach Boy Brian Wilson will play Pet Sounds at the County Fair on Thursday.

Thursday 30
Wouldn’t it be nice if Beach Boy Brian Wilson performed Pet Sounds at the fairgrounds Thursday night? God only knows. I have every faith that Wilson and his crack band could do the collection upside down under water and still make your musical heart swoon; I don’t have faith that the Del Mar Fairgrounds is the venue/soundstage for it — which is to say the sound there can be/often is worse than upside down under water. I saw Wilson last time around and prefer to remember that stellar set at Humphreys...which is where I will be Thursday night for Tom Petty and his first band, Mudcrutch. The pre-Heartbreakers left the supportive confines of Gainesville and Dub’s Lounge — where they rocked the room six(!) nights a week — for Los Angeles in 1974. After a couple studio singles failed to chart, Mudcrutch split up and Petty, guitarist Mike Campbell, and Benmont Tench (keys) went on to make radio good again. To this day, I’d say the Heartbreakers’ hit “Refugee” saved radio from MTV.... Else on Thursday: SciFi-pop duo the Dabbers hit the Hideout with their new joint, I Am Alien Now...right up the road at Soda Bar, abstruse punk trio Obligerant headlines sets by Cabuloan and Slum Summer (I’ll take the green one in medium, Brett)...while Harsh Toke, Elektric Voodoo, and Monarch fill a psych-rock bill at Belly Up in Solana Beach.

Schizophonics, the pride of local rock-roll, play two shows this weekend at Casbah on Friday, Soda Bar on Saturday.

Friday 1
Did your rock-roll heart swell with pride, San Diego, when you heard that international hit Cage the Elephant had invited our own Schizophonics to open a night for them in Salt Lake City? It was/is only a matter of time before the garage-wrecking fuzz-rock Schizos belong to a larger music community, and I guess this is how it will happen for them — Pat and Letty Beers will go to Salt Lake City and blow Cage the Elephant off the stage. Before that, though, you can catch ’em at Casbah Friday night for their Schizophonics Soul Revue, which this time around features Mighty Manfred & the Magnificent and the RaveUps, with DJs Claire and Mr. Mazee at the decks between sets. And on Saturday night the Schizos will split a bill with the Loons at Soda Bar. Their Salt Lake set is next Friday, July 8, btw, if you want to send good vibes thataway then.... Resurrectionist jock Steve West will host his Subbacultcha night Friday at Music Box, this week getting all Moz-n-Marr on your dancing derrier, with a live set by the always-entertaining Smiths tribute Still Ill.... Up in the Heights Friday night, salty dance-rock band Gone Baby Gone plays the Ken Club with Fink Bombs, Fuzz Junkies, and Deep Sea Divas...the hard-rocking Griever plays an EP-release show at Soda Bar after Graf Orlock, Days of Struggle, and Burning Hammer...while Beatle Ringo Starr and his All-Starr Band play Humphreys by the Bay. Ringo plays the drums and sings, just like the guy in Night Ranger!

The comedy-pop duo Flight of the Conchords lands at SDSU's Open Air Theatre on Saturday.

Saturday 2
The Kiwi comedy duo of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement have turned their many-Emmy-nominated HBO series, Flight of the Conchords (2007–’09), into a Grammy-winning, film-acting and –scoring, world-touring success. The songsmiths write and perform send-ups of all pop songforms, including folk, rock, hip-hop, R&B, and Bowie, who is the subject of one of my favorite Conchords episodes, in which the pair explores the many personas of Bowie. I can’t imagine Flight of the Conchords won’t honor his loss with their “Bowie’s in Space” when they play the Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre at SDSU on Saturday night.... The Woods music collective’s Kevin Morby this year released his best solo set yet with Singing Saw, which Pitchfork put its “Best New Album” stamp on, comparing it to ’60s/’70s folk-rock icons Dylan, Cohen, and Hazlewood. It’s wicked good and why vinyl will never go away — Singing Saw was made for turntable. Morby splits a Casbah bill with Adrianne Lenker’s likeminded Brooklyn band Big Thief.... Best of the rest on Saturday includes the Loons/Schizophonics show at the Soda. The Gargoyles are also on that bill...Sculpins headline street-punk sets by Revolt-Chix, Christ Killer, and Santa Claus at the Merrow in Hillcrest... throwback disco act Kool & the Gang bring some deep-fried “Jungle Boogie” to the Del Mar midway...while San Diego’s own “low and slow” Defacore band Godhammered comes down on Brick by Brick.
