How they deal with the world

Wolf Children

Wolf Children (Japan, 2012, FUNimation) is a heartwarming Japanese anime about a mother who struggles to raise her kids that happen to be part wolf. The kids try to figure out who they want to be when they grow up, wolf or human. The development of all three characters is well-written and the choices each of them makes go in line with how they deal with the world in their way. Available on iTunes.

The title character in Run Lola Run (Germany, 1998, Sony Pictures Classics) has 20 minutes to get 100,000 deutsche marks to her boyfriend before gangsters get to him. This film made a huge impression on me as a filmmaker, showing the possibilities of the art of filmmaking. Lola goes through three scenarios as she figures out the best way to complete her goal. Each retry she gets better and each person she runs into has a different future each time. Available on Vudu and Google Play.
