Durans, Weezer, Claypool Lennon Delirium

...and the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this week

Psycho-delic duo Claypool Lennon Delirium drops in on Observatory North Park Wednesday night.

Award-winning Australian bluesman C.W. Stoneking sets up at Soda Bar Sunday night.

Sunday 31
The Australian blues guitarist/singer C.W. Stoneking sets up at Soda Bar Sunday night. He’s an award-winning stringman and performer practiced in the art of vaudeville blues — an old-school entertainer with a gift for gab and banjo. Stoneking is touring in support of his Aussie charts topper Gon’ Boogaloo. San Diego’s own Miss Erika Davies will open the show.... Otherwise, my little bumble bees, English electro-soul duo Honne’s at Casbah...while L.A. alt-folk act HoneyHoney’s at Belly Up.

Monday 1
Chula Vista–based dance-punk band Sound Lupus will headline Anti-Monday sets at Casbah after indie-rock locals Oh, Spirit! and Creature Canyon...while the original blue-eyed soulman (and original singer in the Steve Miller Band) Boz Scaggs (“Lowdown,” “Lido Shuffle”) plays Humphreys by the Bay on Monday.

From Boston, goth-folk singer/songwriter Marissa Nadler headlines sets at Casbah on Tuesday.

Tuesday 2
Touring in support of this year’s Sacred Bones record Strangers, the Boston-born-and-bred folk-pop singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist Marissa Nadler takes the Casbah stage Tuesday night. According to the pros who know, Ms. Nadler’s tracks consist of “goth-folk torch songs and woozy-pop incantations about love and loss.” If you like that, you’ll love her. It’s not my thing, I don’t think, but I can’t stop listening. Wreckmeister Harmonies and Muscle and Marrow open the show.... The Grammy-winning English new-wave group Duran Duran, once known as “the Fab Five” for their dandy look, MTV prowess, and top-of-the-pops hits “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “Rio,” and “The Reflex,” are back in business after a five-year hiatus with last year’s dance-pop disc Paper Gods. Le Bon, Rhodes, the Taylors and their haircuts are touring the U.S. and Canada this summer in support of the record and will play the Sleep Train Amphitheatre on Tuesday with Chic and Nile Rodgers.... Otherwise, you got Texas’ “red-dirt blues rocker” Cody Canada and his band the Departed headlining sets at the Merrow after our own blue-jazz jam band Homesick Hitchers and singer/songer/registered nurse (good onya, JL!) Jesse LaMonaca.

Weezer made a White Album and will roll it out at the Sleep Train on Wednesday.

Wednesday 3
Psycho-delic duo Claypool Lennon Delirium drops in on Observatory North Park Wednesday night. Reader contributor Matthew Burke said of their Monolith of Phobos record, “It sounds as if the Beatles and Pink Floyd had a juvenile delinquent Primus-child.” Dead nuts. L.A.’s sonic experimentalists JJUUJJUU, built for “live vibes and sweet kraut,” will open the show.... Power-pop four-piece Weezer, touring in support of their self-titled (or White Album) rolls into Sleep Train Amphitheatre. It’s a concept record, of sorts, the concept being summer fun, and it nods rockingly to Brian Wilson and his ilk. Sin City’s pop-rock faves Panic! at the Disco will open the show.... Gary Clark Jr. may not be a bluesman’s bluesman with his easy, radio-ready hooks, overdriven guitar, and affected singing, but Jr. wows ’em onstage and will do when he takes it at Humphreys by the Bay on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Clark will be performing his conceptual record The Story of Sonny Boy Slim, which last year reached number one on the Billboard blues charts. There’s more on “Sonny Boy” in this week’s Of Note, so flip or click there for Dave’s breakdown.
