From L.A., the surf-y post-punk quartet Corners takes the Casbah stage Sunday night!
From Echo Park, post-punk quartet Corners is at Casbah with local “party-psych” four-piece Wild Wild Wets and borderland garage band San Pedro El Cortez. Spinning Corners’ Lolipop record from 2014, Maxed Out on Distractions, as I type and yum. Joy Division plays surf-rock. Not a lot of variety, but they ride that shtick all the way to “The Beach.” Yes, I know that’s a New Order song, shaddap.... The Tom Waits-y “trance-based blues band” Marty O’Reilly, which NPR called “a band true to its name: soulful,” and O’side soul-rock singer/guitarist Kimmi Bitter split a bill at Soda Bar Sunday night.
Seattle pop-punk supergroup Childbirth play Soda Bar on Monday.
“Nasty Grrls.” Seattle-based supergroup Childbirth, featuring members of Tacocat, Chastity Belt, and Pony Time, plays Soda Bar behind last year’s Women’s Rights record, another platter of catchy femme-punk songs that “skewer men’s wrongs” (Spin). Give a listen to “I Only F!!ked You as a Joke” for the gist. Lisa Prank and Ditches dig in first.... San Diego-via-Fairless, PA, transplant soul-rockers Blaise Guld & Killchord headline sets at Casbah’s Anti-Monday night after Aukland, New Zealand’s “righteous rhythm and blues” band Svelte and locals the Montell Jordans, which you can read all about in this week’s Ken Leighton–penned “GNR in their DNA” Blurt.
Very metal band (of the screamo varietal) Seeker finds the Soda on Tuesday.
From Dallas in Texas, Seeker finds Soda Bar Tuesday night. According to their Facebook page, Seeker is a “loud, pissed, chaotic heavy metal” quartet touring the western U.S. behind their debut, Unloved. I just listened to the title track and I can tell you that these boys are angry. And from the comment thread that followed, everyone agrees with TheDevan: “the cats pajamas!! :D.” Left Behind, Jasonxvorhees, and Great American Ghost appear first.... Else: British metal band Bullet For My Valentine hits House of Blues after Asking Alexandria and While She Sleeps...while local indie act Headphone plugs in at Casbah. Hand of Gavrilo and Cloudside are also on the bill.
“Raised in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains and stemming from three-chord punk rock provides for a unique twist on traditional instruments.” Outlaw bluegrass band Gallows Bound hangs at Soda Bar with Joe Fletcher & the Wrong Reasons, Delta Bombers, and Sickstring Outlaws. Give a listen to Gallows Bound’s self-titled set on Bandcamp and then shine up yer shit-kickers, y’all, as this stuff’ll make you want to do-si-do at the Soda Wednesday night.
