Party's over, go to sleep

The long-empty space that housed three former nightclubs in Hillcrest will open as a Sleep Train mattress store in April. This was confirmed December 31 by Jennifer Ritchie, with Sleep Train's PR firm, Revolution Public Relations.

The 1202 University Avenue address has been empty for more than two years. The 1202 nightclub closed in 2013. Prior to that, it was the Eden nightclub. It was described as a “true landscape of the mind, body and spirit, Eden provides our community with a retreat from the processes of tradition and conformity.” A third nightclub at the address was Universal, which went dark in January 2010.

The owner of record for 1202 University Avenue is Gaslamp Portfolio Management LLC, with a mailing address at 8110 Aero Drive. The owner received a “notice to remove graffiti” on December 21 from a city code compliance officer. It stated that graffiti had to be removed by December 28 “to avoid enforcement action.” That deadline was not met.

Hutchens PR, representing real estate broker Colliers International, provided a brief statement. Associate Kenny Moore said, “We’ve contacted the owner of the property to ensure they are aware of the graffiti violation notice. We are confident it will be taken care of following the holiday.”
