George Clinton, Henry Rollins, OFF!

...plus Monk's Listless Christmas Listening List (say that five times fast)

Hardcore stalwarts OFF! take the stage at Casbah Wednesday night.

Skeleton Tree is a soft, comforting light in what’s been a very dark year.

Monk’s listless list: my annual Christmas insert where I admit what sucked up most of my time listening-wise this year. Yes, I use the very scientific method of naming my bests by what I listened to most, the 2016 releases that I was uncontrollably drawn back to. This year there’re four of ’em. Moon Shaped Pool spent a lot more time in my earholes than Preoccupations, which spent a bit more time in my earholes than Schmilco. If I revisit 2016 discs next year, and maybe the year after that, it’ll be these three; though, the one I think that will stick with me beyond — the keeper — will be Skeleton Tree. Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds are on another plane, where recording technology doesn’t get in the way of masterworks. It is a sublime, often unsettling, and thoroughly poetic purge from someone who doesn’t goth-up deathsong — Cave eats it raw and drops it judiciously, melodiously, reliably from his beak. Skeleton Tree is a soft, comforting light in what’s been a very dark year. So there you go, four excellent records, imho. Good luck, good listening these holidays.

Funkmeister George Clinton and Parliament Funkadelic will dance all over your holiday hangover at the Observatory Monday night!

Monday 26
Rock and Roll Hall of Famers George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic will funk up Observatory North Park Monday night, dancing all over your Christmas hangover with their brand of “Afrofuturistic psychedelic funk.” Listed as one of the top 100 live acts of all time by both Rolling Stone and Spin, P-Funk’s sure to get the room moving with hits like “Aquaboogie” and “Flashlight”.... Local rock-rollers Amigo, Stökka, and Monolith fill an Anti-Monday bill at Casbah.

Tuesday 27
Punk-rock hothead Henry Rollins has the mic at Observatory North Park on Tuesday night. Rollins, best known for his turn as Black Flag and the Rollins Band’s frontman, is also a writer (LA Weekly, Rolling Stone, etc.), radio host, and actor. Not sure what the 2016–2017 tour du jour has to offer, but with current political climes, you can be sure it will be neck-veiny and spitty.... Else on Tuesday: locals Grim Slippers (“the danceable beats you crave, the darkness you need”) headline sets at Soda Bar by Surly Bonds and Noble War...while pop-punk band Kut-U-Up (Riding in Vans with Boys) hosts their annual Winter Formal, a benefit for the Tony Hawk Foundation, at Belly Up in Solana Beach.

...and they’re OFF!! Keith Morris (Black Flag, Circle Jerks) & Co. (which includes San Diego’s own Mario Rubalcaba on drums, btw) take the Casbah stage after Foreign Bodies for a night of hardcore on the Middletown mainstay’s stage. Dryw Keltz had a chat with Mr. Morris for this week's "No Off switch" Blurt.... Else on Wednesday: “making San Diego goth again,” Warsaw and Soft Lions split a bill at Seven Grand...Dreams Made Flesh (fronted by Ilya’s Blanca Rojas) headlines sets by L1ght Ra1l, Elegant Lust, and Crooked Rulers...while the Office’s Undercover crew breaks on through to the other side and brings back Jim Mojorisin and the Doors.
