Throw Rag then Gloomsday, Buffalo or Donkeys

...and the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this weekend

Salton Sea's sailor-rock quartet Throw Rag reunites for three SoCal shows this weekend!
Salton Sea's sailor-rock quartet Throw Rag reunites for three SoCal shows this weekend!
Aussie surf-punk duo Hockey Dad hits Casbah Thursday night!

Thursday 11
Captain Sean Wheeler and his “sailor rock” quartet from Salton Sea, Throw Rag, are back together for the So-Cal Hoedown this Saturday in Santa Ana, which features Wanda Jackson, the Blasters, Street Walkin’ Cheetahs, and our own Deadbolt, among many other tat-rock favorites. Throw Rag gets warm at Til-Two Thursday night, and heats it up a little more at Pappy & Harriet’s on Friday, when they split a bill with the Supersuckers! Catch one, two, or all three sets, just don’t sleep on these guys, as they are loose, loud, and salty. Get the inside dope in this week’s “Throw Rag throw-down” Blurt. They take the Til-Two stage Thursday night after locals the Downs Family, Screamin’ Yeehaws, and Homeless Sexuals.... According to Reader rock writer Dave Good, VH1 selected Foghat’s “Slow Ride” as one of the best British rock songs of all time. And because of that hit, Dave writes, “It is easy to forget the band’s platinum and double-platinum sales during the 1970s. They likewise earned eight gold albums. By today’s indie-label standards, those are monumental record sales.” Foghat had a secret weapon in 1975 — electric slide guitar. The fools for the city take a slooooow riiide to Belly Up on Thursday for one of the Solana Beach bar’s “evening with” showcases.... Best of the rest Thursday night: Aussie sloppy surf-punk duo Hockey Dad hipchecks Muuy Biien and the Gloomies into the Casbah boards with their new critical-hit record, Boronia...Ikea sludge-metal trio Monolord graces the stage at Soda Bar after Beastmaker and Sweatlodge...while pop-punk four-piece the Ataris plugs in at Brick by Brick with Punchcard and Sideshow. The Ataris are best known for their punk’d riff on Don Henley’s “Boys of Summer.”

Gloomsday will celebrate their Worst Coast Scenario Friday at Whistle Stop!

Friday 12
Dead Feather Moon, Ocelot, and the Paragraphs fill a locals-only bill at Belly Up up in Solana Beach Friday night. Dead Feather Moon’s debut full-length, the “Americana-meets-psychedelic blues” Dark Sun, won Best Alternative Album at the 2012 San Diego Music Awards. The quartet’s celebrating a record-release for their sophomore set, The Finder, which dropped July 5 and apparently comes with a Saint Archer–brewed beer called “Finder Session Ale,” which will be available at the show. What a time we live in.... Another record-releaser, but this one’s a long time coming, as I think Gloomsday’s Worst Coast Scenario was available last December. Anyway, San Diego’s favorite doom-punk duo Justin Cota and Lori Sokolowski will finally celebrate the release of their latest wicked pissah ripper. Get it in yer earholes and we’ll see you Friday night at Whistle Stop, where Strange Planet and AJ Froman open the show.... Else: the soul-rocking Little Richards (Zeros, Schizos) and kitsch-pop band Jason Hanna & the Bullfighters split a bill at Bar Pink...while in the Heights Friday night, DFMK, the Bertos, Haruka, and Heat fill a hardcore bill at Tower Bar...and folk-punk band Sledding with Tigers headlines sets at Soda Bar as we bid farewell to front-Tiger Dan Faughnder, or as the Soda site says, “the best dude ever.” A Blink cover band, Inspired & the Sleep, and Future Crooks set it up.

Soda Bar stages Danish synth-pop snake charmers First Hate this Saturday.

Saturday 13
Whistle Stop hosts an early (5p) set by Grampa Drew’s Flim Flam Revue. A couple hours and a bunch of locals from your favorite bands will get your Saturday going with a good old-fashioned hootenany at the South Park bar.... Then, if you feeling like sticking with the San Diego tip, what better way than with our favorite desert-rocking Donkeys, who headline sets by Heavy Hawaii (nice to see that name back in the listings!) and Hills Like Elephants (them, too!) at Casbah.... Best of the rest Saturday night: Danish synth-pop duo First Hate will play a “snake rhythm” set at Soda Bar after electro-pop locals Grand Prix and Nylon Apartments. DJ Jeff Terich will be at the decks between sets...L.A.’s “rock ’n’ roll spaghetti surf blues” trio Kat Myers & the Buzzards plays a freebie at Seven Grand...while northa town, folksy baritoned bard Jake Smith, aka White Buffalo, roams into Belly Up after blues-based Chicago trio Alice Drinks the Kool Aid.
