The real Key & Peele: “The resemblance is uncanny.”

WAITING IN LINE FOR POPCORN, AMC MISSION VALLEY 20 — Keanu, the new comedy from Comedy Central comedians Key & Peele, has already attracted attention for its whimsical marketing campaign, which inserted the film’s titular kitten into the posters for recent hits such as Mad Max: Fury Road and The Revenant. But even though the film opens today, the variations have continued to show up in multiplexes and online. And the latest of these features a couple of local ne’er-do-wells who bear a strange resemblance to the funny fellows.

Explains star and cowriter Jordan Peele, “In the film, our characters are mild-mannered dudes who have to adopt a more ‘street’ attitude when they start mingling with a criminal element as part of their effort to recover a pet cat. We were staying in San Diego when these sketches hit the local news in mid-April, and we couldn’t help but be impressed by the likeness. Substituting images of actual criminals on a poster for a film about good guys who pretend to be bad guys … it just worked for us."
