Escondido Roots Series: Mexico

Cultural performances and activities highlight the traditions of Mexico. The afternoon includes a dance performance by El Tapatio, Ballet Folklorico by de San Dieguito, and Farr Elementary School, mariachi performances by Mariachi los Caballeros and Mariachi Chula Vista, and storytelling by Patti & Panchita Tell Bilingual Stories. Visitors can visit the hands-on exhibits of the museum for free during the event.

Black Bass Fishing Contest

National Bass West is a tournament series in California and Arizona. In the San Diego region, the tournaments are usually held at Lake Hodges, Lower Otay, and El Capitan. This Saturday is the final winter tournament at El Capitan Reservoir. The lake’s depth, more than double most of the other county lakes, allows water temperatures from the low 50s to an 80-degree average at the surface in the summer. Where will the big fish stage? For those who want a better view, El Capitan welcomes float tubes, kayaks, motor boats, and jet skis.

Participating restaurants include 100 Wines Kitchen, Bombay, Brazen BBQ, Bread & Cie, Gossip Grill, Hillcrest Brewing Company, Lemonade, Oscar Wilde’s, Luna Grill, Lotus Thai, Rakitori Japanese Pub, Tajima, The Brew Project, Uptown Tavern, and Urban Mo’s.

The 30th annual festival of the agricultural heritage of Fallbrook offers a big Avocado Central area with a guacamole contest, Art of the Avocado contest entries on display, the Avo 500 children’s car race, and a Best-Decorated Avocado contest. With over 450 vendors, an artisan walk, food courts, a community stage with local talent performing, kids’ activities and contests, and live music in the beer and wine garden.

Billed as “the largest free annual environmental fair in the world,” Earth Day in Balboa Park presents more than 300 exhibitors, themed areas, a food pavilion, a children’s activity area, four entertainment venues, the Children’s Earth Parade, the eARTh Gallery arts and crafts show, and the Cleaner Car Concourse. Each year the event draws 60,000 visitors.

Taste of Point Loma

Seafood and ethnic cuisine from 20 restaurants, cafés, and bakeries along the Point Loma peninsula. New this year is a celebration of Point Loma’s Portuguese community, which grew in the early 1900s around the tuna industry. Enjoy traditional Portuguese food and entertainment at the check-in location, Portuguese Hall, and then walk, bike, or take the free shuttle service to each restaurant to sample their food item. Dog-friendly patios are identified with a paw print next to the restaurant’s logo on the ticket. Restaurants include the Elegant Truffle, The Wine Pub, Old Venice Restaurant, Quarterdeck, The Brigantine Point Loma, Mitch’s Seafood, Bali Hai, many more.
