David Yow fronts Flipper

...plus Mudhoney, White Sh!t, Beehive, and Bully

SanFran sludge-punk band Flipper takes the Casbah stage Thursday night!
SanFran sludge-punk band Flipper takes the Casbah stage Thursday night!
Houston hardcore's D.R.I. stacks 'em at Brick by Brick Thursday night.

Thursday 22
I used to art-up my old skate decks and hang them on the walls. My favorite, and most coveted by my friends, was a blacked-out Vision deck with a white stencil of the Flipper logo — a line drawing of a shark with exes for eyes and triangle teeth “blow’n chunks.” The raunching of the beloved TV dolphin by a California punk band was a coming-of-age of sorts — no thing is sacred, right? This year the SanFran band enlisted Scratch Acid/Jesus Lizard vocalist David Yow (one of my favorite front men) to get Flipper back on the road. By all accounts so far, it’s a marriage made on the loud side of Heaven. With our own Widows and Stalins of Sound setting the Casbah stage, this’d be the gig to see Friday night.... Miss the door in Middletown, however, hoof it over to Bay Park, where Houston-based hardcore hits D.R.I. take the stage at Brick by Brick to spin a pit with their brand of “crossover thrash.” From Phoenix, she-punk four-piece Doll Skin opens that show.... Else on Thursday: indie-rock acts Heart Beat Trail, Mittens, Super Buffet, and Cougar Del Mar fill a locals-only bill at Bar Pink in North Park...while up at Belly Up, Austin, Texas–based conceptual-metal act the Sword bring their “metalphysical” High Country to the Solana Beach stage after Kadaver and All Them Witches.

Nashville's '90s indie-rock throwbacks Bully hit the Hideout on Friday!

Friday 23
I’ll be slumming it at the Troubadour in L.A. Friday night for the Flipper/Hot Shit (more on them anon) show cuz I’m a binger, so what.... Around town Friday night, I see indie darling McBriare Samuel Lanyon “MacDeMarco’s sold out the Observatory, and rightfully so, as Mac has got a three-year, five-release hit streak going.... Nashville alt-rock act Bully hits the Hideout after Heat and Dead Soft. Bully’s debut Feels Like was a pretty unanimous critical pick this summer for its catchy, fuzzed-up take on ’90s indie (the Weezer side of Indieville, not a lot of pavement there), but it’s Alicia Bognanno’s gift of gab and melody that makes you want to give Bully your lunch money.... Best of the rest Friday night finds Portland metal band Red Fang headlining sets at Casbah after Whores and Wild Throne. This is Roadrunner Records’ Autumn Breeze tour, which comes with the tagline “If you like to headbang until your head falls off your body, this is for you”...and there’s a coupla tour kick-offs at Til-Two, as friends and fam say so long to local punk-rock acts Sic Waiting and Caskitt. This gig’s also a record-release for Sic Waiting’s Derailer record, which drops that very day, so dude’s are going to be pumped! Western Settings and Bainbridge are also on the bill. Have fun, guys, but be safe on the road, eat right, and for god’s sake play nice in the van!

Casbah sets up Seattle sludge slingers Mudhoney on Saturday!

Saturday 24
This is one of those weeks I wished I had a pad over the Casbah...Seattle grunge vets Mudhoney hit town to play a club date at their favored Casbah. Dryw Keltz had a chat with guitarist Steve Turner for our “Mudhoney like it small” Blurt, and it’s also Reader pop critic Dave Good’s gig pick in his weekly Of Note. So go load up on those Mudhoney goodies, and I’ll see you stagefront Saturday night after Tar Halos and the Grids.... L.A.-based throwback hardcore quartet White Shit (featuring members of the Melvins, Big Business, Murder City Devils, and Monorchild) will play the Hideout with our own Beehive & the Barracudas for what’s sure to be the (other) sets to see on Saturday night. For fans of the first-wave handmade hardcore brand, White Shit’s Sculpted Beef is an essential set. Pop online when ya can and give a listen to “Jim Morrison.” This is a tough one to miss, but I covered my bases with tickets to the White Shit gig at Troubadour on Friday. Also, Mudhoney.... If you’re not into either of those shows, WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU?! Juuuust kidding, there’s lots of other neat-o shows, like San Diego’s favorite soul-rockin’, sock-hoppin’ dance band Gone Baby Gone at Bar Pink with Long Beach power-pop trio Bella Novela...or local Americana act Raf Deza & the Avenue at the Balboa (the old Tin Can) with sepia-toned throwbacks G. Burns Jug Band...the bridesmaid who has suddenly become the bride, Nashville singer/songwriter Natalie Prass (Jenny Lewis, Gaslight Anthem), plays Soda Bar behind her well-received self-titled debut...emo-screamos the Saddest Landscape take the stage at the Ché Café after State Faults and Griever...while farther up the 5, Oingo Boingo tribute Dead Man’s Party throws down their nu-ska sound at Belly Up.
