Deafheaven, a Heartbreaker, Hinds

...and the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this weekend

San Fran black-metal band Deafheaven shred New Bermuda at Casbah Thursday night!
San Fran black-metal band Deafheaven shred New Bermuda at Casbah Thursday night!
Irish rock-n-soul singer Hozier plays the Open Air Theatre Thursday night.

Thursday 15
SanFran metalgaze band Deafheaven deliver New Bermuda to Casbah on Thursday. Yes, metalgaze. You take black metal tones, a singer who — though apparently wordwise and, um, deep — makes every kind of sound except the singing kind, and you add shoegaze’s glacial weight and drift and you get metalgaze. I have yet to chisel my way through Bermuda, but last year’s Sunbather — once I downed the vocal affectations of frontman George Clarke like a bottle of bad medicine — hit me just right. I suspect Bermuda will do the same if everyone from NPR to my barber are correct in their assessment that Deafheaven’s brought artifice and intellect (and a little Oasis-style pop!) to metal music. Plug ’em up kids, because with Swedish death-metal maniacs Tribulation opening the show, this one’s going to be pegged in the red for about four straight ear-bleeding hours. Can’t wait!... Else on Thursday: Detroit’s punk alchemists Goddam Gallows (“punk rock mixed with metal and bluegrass”) and San Diego psychobilly trio the Strikers split a bill at Soda Bar...art-pop ’Zonies ROAR take the stage at Ché Café after our own Soft Lions, T. Rexico, and Nimzo Indians...while at SDSU’s Open Air Theatre, Irish rock-n-soul radio star Hozier takes you to church with Little Green Cars.

Ex-Heartbreaker Walter Lure takes the stage at Til-Two Friday night.

Friday 16
Ex-Heartbreaker Walter Lure and his band the Waldos headline sets at Til-Two after San Diego punk perennials the Zeros. From the show bill it looks as if Lure is touring a live set of Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers’ high-water mark L.A.M.F., which Lure’s guitar (and some songwriting) is featured on. Lure then toured with the Heartbreakers during the famous Anarchy Tour, which showcased the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the Damned. Dude’s a stockbroker by trade, and a pretty cool part of punk history. L.A. punk-n-roll band Dirty Eyes also on this triple-thrill bill.... Best of the rest Friday night finds Socal ska punks Voodoo Glow Skulls skanking into Soda Bar after the Phenomenauts and O’side Sound System for a night of party-rock...the ex-Missus Dale Crover, Lori S, and her SanFran stoner-metal band Acid King plays Brick by Brick with Giant Squid. Uh-huh, Giant Squid...L.A. big band Fishbone brings their funky ska stew to Solana Beach bar Belly Up...while a little farther up the 5, LUX Art Institute in Encinitas will host electronic artist Dan Deacon after our own pop absurdists Gary Wilson and Island Boy.

The Irenic has lo-fi lovelies Hinds on Saturday night!

Saturday 17
From Madrid, Spain, garage-rock group Hinds (ex-Deers) play the Irenic Saturday night. These lovely lo-fi ladies have enjoyed much critical praise and been a Burger Records featured band for their pure-pop Strokes/Velvets style. They are touring in advance of their much anticipated full-length debut, Leave Me Alone, due out on Lucky Number Records in January, just in time for a super late Christmas present. With up-and-coming locals the Gloomies and NYC new-wavers Public Access T.V. plugging in first, this’d be the gig to see on Saturday.... Miss the door at the Irenic, UK chillwaver Chad Valley’s at the Hideout with Stranger Cat...and right up the road from that, Portlandian indie folkies Horse Feathers follow the River Whyless into Soda Bar.... You can call her “Miss Jackson” if you’re nasty. Touring in support of her first record since her brother’s death in 2009, pop diva Janet Jackson’s Unbreakable bears an uncanny resemblance to Michael’s danceable R&B and his hiccup croon, and the critics are gobbling it up! Miss Jackson graces the stage at Viejas Arena at SDSU on Saturday night.... L.A.’s favorite loopy post-rock duo El Ten Eleven kicks off a weekend at Casbah, taking the Middletown stage Saturday and Sunday nights. The El Tens are out to tout this year’s Fast Forward, a lament that’s been called “melancholy with beats” and been compared to Disintegration-era Cure. One of the dudes lost his dad. L.A.’s “slacker-punk” duo Sego opens both shows.
