New Kids on the Block: The Main Event

Pop group joins the crowd at Viejas Arena

Guess who...

It was about halfway through New Kids on the Block’s two-hour set at Viejas Arena that a female fan ran past security guards and onto the stage, only to be corralled and removed seconds later. If she wanted to get close to the group, she should have just stayed in her seat.

These guys.

The New Kids went out into the audience several times during their San Diego stop, one of the first dates of the New Kids’ “Main Event” tour. The arena was far from sold out, but the band rewarded those screaming fans who did turn out with a few close-up moments, all part of a spirited show filled with hits from a catalog that now spans almost three decades.

All five members of the group were onstage for most of the show — a contrast from the New Kids concert two nights earlier, which Jonathan Knight sat out due to a facial injury. At one point in the show, Joey McIntyre introduced a sixth member — his young son, who came up briefly to sing with the group. Which might explain why the fan who breached security was thrown out: to be onstage this night, you had to be either a New Kid or a new kid.
