First-wave Brit-punks UK Subs take the stage at Soda Bar Sunday night!

Sunday 14
Charlie Harper is the punk-rock Robert Pollard. He’ll just keep writing songs and then dropping LPs when he has enough of ’em. Harper’s English street-punk quartet UK Subs drifts into Soda Bar behind this year’s well-received Yellow Leader, their 25th proper studio record over their 40-year career, not counting the band’s singles, EPs, and compilation appearances. With a steadier lineup over the past five years, Brit blog Über Röck is keen to point out that the last three records, “Work in Progress, XXIV, and now Yellow Leader are the sounds of a band bang on form and writing records better than they ever have.” Bang on. Sculpins, Homeless Sexuals, and the Executives fill the fun punk bill up in the Heights.... Otherwise, you’ve got Aussie indie-pop trio DMA’s at Casbah on Sunday, recommended for fans of the Oasis brand...while down at House of Blues it’s Brooklyn-based rootsy indie act the Damnwells upstairs in the Voodoo Room and 70-years-young blues-rock guitarist Robin Trower (Procol Harum) downstairs on the main stage.

Rapper Lil' Wayne will introduce Fluxx to his new joint, Free Weezy Album, Monday night.

Monday 15
Raptastic Monday around town, as hip-hop Chicagoan Lupe Fiasco hits the Observatory North Park behind his well-received new record Tetsuo & Youth. Robert Christgau gave it an A minus: “[It is] a music-driven album in which violin interludes named after the seasons separate long stretches of associative protest poetry.” Hmm...and Lil’ Wayne rolls up on Fluxx downtown, touring in advance of his highly anticipated Free Weezy Album, a record the “retired” rapper calls his “best work yet”.... Else: Saint Shameless features members of San Diego mainstays the Dragons and Manual Scan and will play the Tower Bar on Monday...“hard-soul/glitch-folk” Seattle act Motopony trots into Casbah...while San Antonio post-core quintet Signalman takes the stage at Soda Bar behind this year’s self-titled La Escalara Records record.

Portlandian indie-pop band And And And do their debut at Casbah Tuesday night.

Tuesday 16
Belly Up books folk-pop singer/songwriter Jonathan Richman Tuesday night. The former Modern Lover will share the stage with his drummer sidekick Tommy Larkins for a night of Richman’s heart-on-sleeve (and often hilarious) song stylings. You probably remember the pair for their Greek Chorus bits in There’s Something About Mary. Funny flick.... Else: the “spirit-filled” L.A. act Eagle Rock Gospel Singers will be kicking off a June-Tuesday residency at Casbah. San Diego’s own “next-gen power trio” Taurus Authority opens this week's show...while a Portland band band band called And And And plays the Soda Bar with Glen Galloway’s (Octagrape) Christian hip-hop side Soul-Junk. Vice magazine called And And And’s debut, The Failure, “equal parts Northwest indie rock and frontier desert twang.” I will agree, but I don’t understand why the lead single, “Drink for Free,” is not on the album...

San Diego psych-rockers Amerikan Bear will headline heavy sets at Casbah humpnight.

Wednesday 17
“Your new favorite electro-dance band,” Holiday Mountain, plays the Soda Bar Wednesday night. The Austin-by-way-of-Boston trio has been garnering good press for its debut, You Be You. The Wall Street Journal even weighed in, calling it “vivid, catchy, and candy colored.” Like-minded locals Bakkuda and Natalie Emmons will open the show...while down in Middletown, San Diego’s premier psychedelic-soul band, Amerikan Bear, takes the stage at Casbah after a headtrip through the Fro-zone with O.B. psych ’n’ roll band AJ Froman and sonic-rock explorers Future Age.
