Materialism and all its miseries can never be conquered by materialism. Armies when they attempt to conquer armies only multiply and make brutes of humanity. Spirituality must conquer the West. Slowly they are finding out that what they want is spirituality to preserve them as nations. They are waiting for it, they are eager for it. Where is the supply to come from? Where are the men ready to go out to every country in the world with the message of the great sages of India? Vivekananda (1863–1902), born Narendra Nath Datta, was the chief disciple of Hindu mystic and saint Ramakrishna (1836–1886). A key figure in the large-scale introduction of Indian philosophy and notions of divinity to the West, especially as found in the Vedanta and Yoga traditions, he is perhaps best known for helping to open dialogue between Eastern and Western religious traditions, thereby raising Hinduism to the status of a major world religion. Because of his strong sense of spiritual nationalism, Vivekananda was also responsible for the rise of Indian self-awareness during British rule of the country in the 19th Century.
