Catch a surf-rock set by Swami John Reis & the Blind Shake at Casbah on Sunday night!

Sunday 15
Swami John Reis & the Blind Shake catch a wave to Casbah behind their brand-new instrumental-rock record, Modern Surf Classics. Catch up with Reis in last week’s “Swami’s new trip” feature in the Reader. Apparently most of Modern Surf Classics was recorded underneath Crystal Pier in Pacific Beach. Reis told indie-rock reporter The Bay Bridged that this added bit of authenticity came courtesy of “the expertise of Ben Moore and an outfitted VW Van as a mobile recording unit.” Bitch. Ing. San Diego’s surf-rock deconstructionists Creepxotica, Secret Samurai, and Alvino & the Dwells will open the show.... Other mentionables’d be the Chicago-born and -bred blues-rockers Steepwater Band who play Soda Bar behind their best-of set Diamond Days. This solid-rock quartet is celebrating 25 years in the biz. Kid Wilderness and Graham Nancarrow open the show...while Milwaukee-based hardcore/metal band Enabler plays the Tower Bar behind their latest, La Fin Absolue Du Monde. “Sludge and grind” Relapse Records act Call of the Void will set it up.

Top-shelf Chicago boogie and blues group Steepwater Band set up at Soda Bar Sunday night!

Monday 16
The Hideout has a doozy of a brat-punk double-bill Monday night, when L.A. duo Slutever joins Seattle’s “Trapper-Keeper” punker Lisa Prank on the City Heights stage...and if you need a change of sight/sound, just stroll it down to Soda Bar, where L.A.’s nu-metal vets Otep’s headlining sets after Terror Universal, Thira, and Downfall 2012.... From Portland in Oregon, roots ’n’ roll duo Hopeless Jack & the Handsome Devil will hit the Tower Bar after Telling Lies and the Philosopher’s Ray Gun.... San Diego’s sepia-toned folkies Midnight Pine have got Anti-Monday duty at Casbah this week after that deep-cuts desert-rock jukebox Rio Peligroso and barroom band Listening to Rocks.

Los Angeles-based brat-punk duo Slutever hit the Hideout on Monday.

Tuesday 17
It is Fat Tuesday, y’all, so dig up some beads and hit the streets for the Gaslamp’s annual vom-a-thon.... Or — OR — go see a show, like super-duper Supersucker Eddie Spaghetti (“one-quarter member of the Greatest Rock N Roll Band In The World”), who will do what he does so well at Casbah after our own O (Fluf) and Grampa Drew (flim-flammer) do what they do so well. Should be a fun one!... Miss the door in Middletown, them alt-rock kids with big gifts Big Bad Buffalo roam into the Merrow in Hillcrest...this week’s featured “Now you know” band, Major Minus, will be at Soda Bar with up-and-comers the Verigolds and Cult Vegas...while the Degradys bunch play the Hideout with the always-salty Cardielles and Young Wants for your recommended daily allowance of throwback Cali garage rock.

Super-duper Supersucker Eddie Spaghetti brings the rawk to Casbah Tuesday night!

Wednesday 18
She’s all about that bass: novelty-pop singer Meghan Trainor takes the stage at House of Blues on humpnight. Trainor will be fresh from the 57th Annual Grammy Awards, where she was nominated for Song of the Year, “All About That Bass,” and Record of the Year, Title. Both of which have been crushing the competition on the Billboard charts, if you hold any credence there. I don’t, but damn if I can’t get that tune out of my head, and all I did was type the title, type the title, no treble aaaaaaghhffrgggarrrr.... Also downtown Wednesday night, the comedy troupe behind Canadian mockumentary Trailer Park Boys will be at Balboa Theatre classing up the joint...while up in the Heights, Nikki Sixx’s kids have got an electronic pop-rock band called Figs Vision, and they’ll be at the Soda Bar with Digital Lizards of Doom...while Portland-based indie-pop band Miss Massive Snowflake lands onstage at the Merrow after Yukon Dreams ’bout that bass, ’bout that bass, no treble...
