Whiskey Shivers, Frankie Boots, Haunter, the Touchies

...and the best of the rest in San Diego clubs this week

SanFran roots band Frankie Boots and the County Line step into Soda Bar Tuesday night.

Soda Bar sets up Austin's rockin' bluegrass band Whiskey Shivers on Sunday night.

Sunday 3
Bringing back the mullet! It’ll be business up front and party in the back when Austin bluegrass band Whiskey Shivers and them Americana road dogs in Goodnight, Texas get together to co-headline sets up and down the West Coast this month. The country-fried kooks will be kicking it off at Soda Bar Sunday night after San Diego’s favorite pub-rock band Lexington Field sets the bar.

Local psych-pop trio the Gloomies will play a month of Mondays at Soda Bar in January.

Monday 4
Back to Soda Bar on Monday, and a month of Mondays thereafter, as the Gloomies kick off a weekly residency at the Normal Heights hot spot. This week Ditches and Whiskey Circle set ’em up. Ripped from the Soda Bar site: local psych-pop trio the Gloomies were recently named “NME’s buzz band of the week,” while according to DIY Magazine they’re “a cross between Warpaint’s Joshua Tree adventures running headfirst into Kevin Parker’s mind-trip.”

Tuesday 5
Voted Best Americana Act in the Bay Area two years running, the Sebastopol septet Frankie Boots and the County Line is touring in advance of this spring’s sophomore thing, Leave the Light On. The folk-rock-y rabble-rousers take the stage at Soda Bar after like-minded locals G. Burns Jug Band and the singer/songwriter Raf Deza.... Else on Tuesday: Radio Halloran dials in a hard-rocking locals-only show with Little Heroine, Foreign Bodies, and Privatized Air at the Merrow in Hillcrest...while experimental indie act Bandalier’s at Casbah with up-and-coming locals Just Like Jenna and the Sinclairs.

San Antone's black-metal band Haunter heads to Ché Café on Wednesday!

Wednesday 6
From San Antonio in Texas, experimental metal band Haunter heads to Ché Café on their first-ever West Coast tour. The trio’s working on a full-length to follow last year’s blackened-screamo set He Who Jumps Into the Void Owes No Explanation to Those Who Stand and Watch. I suppose not. Haunter’s not for everyone, but these boys have driven a long way to scream in your face, the least you can do is listen.... I’ve already listened, so I’ll be checking out the Touchies who hook up with Kitty Plague and Starcrossed at Hillcrest hideaway the Merrow Wednesday night. And, oh look, one of our favorite record players, the rock-roll preservationist DJ Heather Hardcore, will be spinning ’round sets at that one :)
