San Diego clubs kicking it off with the Sess, Ziggy Shuffledust, Big Sandy, and the Generators

San Diego garage punks the Sess take the stage at Soda Bar New Year's Eve!

Thursday 31
San Diego garage-punks the Sess will reunite for a night at Soda Bar New Year’s Eve. The catchy quintet was a San Diego Music Awards nominee around the time their band-breaking Agendumb record dropped, a collection whose closing three tracks (a cover of the Remains’ “Don’t Look Back,” the busy but math-beautiful “Wisdom Tooth Gumbs,” and the ambitious seven-minute-long, organ-accompanied ride through “Tunnel Love”) continue to pop up on my running mix. The Sess were an ambitious bunch that burned bright and too fast. Good on Cory Stier for coaxing them back! Lara McCaffrey got the story in this week’s “Seven-year itch” Blurt. Stier’s Drug Wars, Keepers, and Vyper Skwad will open the show.... Gary Shuffler (Honey Glaze) will don the duds of the Thin White Duke for his annual holiday hit Ziggy Shuffledust and the Spiders From Mars at Casbah. The Bowie tribute touches most of his personas but excels as the Starman. Electric Warrior and TV Eye are also on the bill.... Tex-Mex Grammy winners Los Lobos lope into Belly Up for the Solana Beach bar’s New Year’s Eve party. Read Dave Good’s take on the Rock-Roll Hall of Fame snubees in this week’s Of Note.... Bay Park bar Brick by Brick hosts New Year’s Evil, featuring tribute groups Alice and the Cooper Gang and Lords of Sabbath...while English house duo “Foamo” and “RackNRuin,” aka Gorgon City, jack-in their electronic jams at the Music Box in Little Italy.

Here comes 2016, dog. For those of you in need of New Year’s resolutions, here’s a simple one: let’s get out and see more shows. These bands and bars need our support. The TV/tablet/computer/gamer/pets/bundt cake will be there when we get home.

Barefoot freaking Hockey Goalie is rolling the Zamboni into Blackthorn Pub in Squaremont Saturday night. See you there.

Saturday 2
Once in a blue moon the wacky cats in Barefoot Hockey Goalie put on the pads and mount a stage to melt faces with their hockey rock. Must be a blue moon Saturday night, as '90s greats are rolling the Zamboni into Blackthorn Pub to throw down Darius: A Rock Opera and try out their new single, "F!!k You, I'm From Clairemont!" See you in Squaremont, Crawler followers.... L.A. punk-n-roll five-piece the Generators headlines sets at Soda Bar after Castoff and Strangely Strange. The Generators are a 20-year-strong blast from the past whose latest, Life Gives, Life Takes, is an easy-listening inroad to the band’s ’90s-inspired sound, with energetic nods to Pennywise and Bad Religion as well as bright strokes of reggae-rock. It’s a California record from a California band, and fans of that brand would do well to check ’em out, as these guys always leave it all onstage.... Another L.A. institution, Big Sandy and His Flyrite Boys, take the stage at Casbah after our own timeless treasure Fanny and the Atta Boys, a coupla bands inclined to up your dosage of American roots music, from the -billy bins, anyway — rockabilly, hillbilly — trilling lots of tunes you can swing your girl to, if you got them gifts.... More L.A.? You got it, as West Coast rapper Too Short rocks the mic at Fluxx downtown. Googlin’ Todd Anthony Shaw, Short’s family name, I came across all sorts of reports on how he chose prison over probation in a DUI case this summer. Ups the street cred, I guess. The rapper’s been at it for 30 years and 16 studio records.... Tower Bar fills a punk-rawk bill under the spire, with Dead on the Wire, Paper Hearts, Chamber Sixx, and something called “reverb massacre” by Dethsurf [sic].
