Thursday 24
Happy hols, y’all. The clubbety crawler’s going to be understandably low on quantity this holiday week, but bulging with big-Q Quality. For inst., Thursday night rings in the Casbah’s annual Exile on Kettner, where local rock-rollers strut their best Stones stuff. This year’s hosts are them blues-bent garage wreckers the Schizophonics unwrapping their inaugural Stone Cold Christmas show. If you’ve yet to catch Pat Beers (a ringer for young Mick) in action, dude’s a human cyclone on guitar with brass pipes. And the energy he and wife Lety (drums) put out will warm your cockles’ cockles. Schizos posted that “dancing shoes are a must” and to get to the club by 9 “because Santa Claus needs some lovin’!” Do NOT let your gf/bf sit on his knee.
Friday 25
America is closed for Christmas, so here’s this year’s listless list: Protomartyr’s Agent Intellect. The post-punk platter is nicely marbled, cooked to perfection, with just the right amount of gristle. I’ll be chewing on this one for years to come and cannot wait for their March 2 date at Soda Bar. You’re welcome.
Saturday 26
Local bandleader Pall Jenkins (Three Mile Pilot, Black Heart Procession) fronts the Latin-dub-flavored small orchestra Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects, which recently dropped its sophomore set, No Wrong, No Rights. In this week’s Of Note, Reader pop critic Dave Good sifts through the band’s music and dubious backstory, so flip or click there for more on them. The Bassics and Lumps will open this Soda Bar show. (F-to-the-Y-to-the-I: Mr. Tube also performs Sunday night at Ché Café and New Year’s Eve at the Lafayette Hotel).... Best of the rest Saturday night: them Alvin boys from Downey, the Blasters, are going to light up Casbah with raucous roots-n-roll after like-minded Los Angelenos Deke Dickerson and the Ecco-fonics...House of Blues has the Cured for your Holiday Hangover, as well as Strangelove, Planet Earth, and Idolized, all tributes to you guess who...while Belly Up stages a Cash’d Out Christmas, which also features Sara Petite as Loretta Lynn and Vegas-style Elvis Presley tribute Suspicious Minds.
