There are two kinds of alt-rock fans: Cracker fans and Camper Van Beethoven fans, so the frontman for both bands, David Lowery, has got you covered. In advance of their split bill at Belly Up Sunday night, Lowery covered a lot more with Reader writer Dryw Keltz. Apparently, whether you’re a “Cracker” or a “Camper” depends on where you align on the whole Sharknado debate (see this week’s Blurt).... Else: alt-rockers Weatherbox, Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects, and Big Bad Buffalo fill a killer local bill at Ché Café Sunday night...while salty soul-rock sugar lump Dizzy Miss Vizzy and her boys in Gone Baby Gone headline sets at Soda Bar after The End and Surly Bonds.
Hardcore supergroup OFF! (Black Flag, Circle Jerks, Redd Kross, Burning Brides, Rocket from the Crypt, Hot Snakes, Earthless, Battalion of Saints — how’s that for a band CV?) will rage on the Anti-Monday stage at Casbah this week after likeminded locals Cruz Radical and female-fronted SoCal punks the Side Eyes.... Up in the Heights Monday night, it’ll be Weezer Under Cover at the Office...Tori Roze and her Hot Mess host a Soultry show across the street at Bar Pink...while up at Belly Up, Chicano-rock big band Ozomatli takes the Solana Beach stage behind their latest hot-salsa set, A Place in the Sun.
Luna, the on-again, off-again New York indie-rock quartet that Rolling Stone magazine called “the best band you’ve never heard of” is — you guessed it — on again! Dean Wareham and company are playing two West Coast shows this week, Tuesday night at Casbah and New Year’s Eve at the Starline Social Club in Oakland. SanFran indie-pop band Papercuts opens both shows. Favorite Luna record? Galaxie 500’s On Fire. I’m kidding! I’m actually partial to the Luna Live album — it’s a solid overview of their stuff interspersed with that wacky Wareham repartée.... If you miss the door in Middletown, Aussie electronica artist Chet Faker’s touring in support of his new EP, Work, and he’ll be at Observatory North Park...Radio Halloran dials up the electronic rock band with a sci-fi bent Digital Lizards of Doom for Hillcrest hideaway the Merrow. Geneva Bedlam and Setback City open that show...while Soda Bar sets up L.A. rap-rock act Crazy Town (“Butterfly”) with Entertainment Law and that half man, half cat, half record-player DJ Mancat. I know that’s three halves, shut up.
Surf-rock trio Tijuana Panthers spring into Soda Bar Wednesday night after San Diego’s own Soaks and Spooky Cigarette. The Panthers are touring in support of this year’s Poster record, which continues to temper the Long Beach trio’s garage-rock from Black Lips punk to Monkees pop. It’s all ear candy.... Chicago hip-hop duo Acumental and Terminal Knowledge, aka the Palmer Squares, are two self-professed “sissy boys with an unhealthy infatuation with polysyllabic rhyme schemes.” Huh. They play the Merrow with Atlantis Rizing and Koolbeef Productions on humpnight...while someone or someones from the English synth-pop group Hot Chip will spin a DJ set at Casbah.
