Phora connected with fans, his “family” to use his words, with intimacy in the House of Blues’ Voodoo Room. At a time in hip-hop when artists are preoccupied with describing often fictitious material possessions and accomplishments, Phora, Eskupe, and Anthro Beats are content to share their clumsy stumbling toward manhood humbly with their loyal fan base.

Throughout the set, Phora encouraged onlookers that “whatever color [they] are, wherever [they’re] from, or whatever [they’ve] been through, [they] are welcome in the Yours Truly family,” with a sincerity that rarely translates from stage to audience.

Phora moved seamlessly through his discography, using his story as an artist, as a man, as the thread tying the set neatly together. There were moments when Phora’s followers sang over him, singing their stories through his lyrics right back to the Anaheim youngster who has found a way to connect with his peers in a way many artists only dream of.

Billionaire Buck and Reeves Junya both fed off of the energy Phora’s following was bubbling with, and each was marked with enthusiasm for rap and a humble thankfulness to be on the road with the Yours Truly family.
