Chickenbone Slim’s ten-song blues CD Gone debuts September 1 at Smitty’s Service in Normal Heights. “Chickenbone Slim and the Biscuits started three years ago by playing Smitty’s Tasty Truck Tuesdays,” notes Slim, who had to stop gigging at the venue after ASCAP demanded payment for playing covers. “Since the inspiration and debuts of much of our original material happened at Tasty Trucks, we wanted to play our original songs for the kids, dogs, and foodies at this weekly event.” A more formal CD-release party will be held at Proud Mary’s in Kearny Mesa on September 4, “with lots of special guests, including several former Biscuits.”

The first CD and vinyl editions of On Demand Living by Bit Maps are premiering at the Whistle Stop on September 9.

Jewel’s Picking Up the Pieces is due September 11 on Sugar Hill Records. A companion memoir, Never Broken, is being published by Penguin Random House.

Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects will debut No Wrong, No Rights at the Casbah on September 12, with Creepy Creeps and Tropical Popsicle also on the bill. Recorded between 2007 and 2015 by Pall Jenkins and Brad Lee at local SDRL, the album’s digital and CD release will be supplemented by a 12-inch vinyl edition limited to 500 copies.

The release party for Astra Kelly’s Back to Ten (just nominated for Best Local Recording in this year’s SDMAs) happens September 18 at Bella Vista Social Club in La Jolla. “Since the album features 11 local talents, many of them will be there that night, doing their own sets and also sitting in with me on the song they were featured on,” says Kelly, who will be joined onstage by Gayle Skidmore, Jeff Berkley, Simeon Flick, Carissa Schroeder, Cathryn Beeks, Matt Davies, and Podunk Nowhere. The album also features Trent Hancock and Chris Wilson.

For the release gig, “A few of my students from Rock and Roll San Diego will kick things off, and everyone will join in for one fun cover to close out the evening.”
