Can't you smell that smell?

Gas leak at Ocean Beach construction site

This morning, November 4, a little after 7:00, firefighters, San Diego police, and SDG&E crews responded to a gas leak on the southwest corner of Abbott Street and Satatoga Avenue.

Between 30 and 50 workers were evacuated from the condominium complex being built on the corner. Half of the beach parking lot at the foot of Santa Monica Avenue was cordoned off and vehicle owners were not allowed to access. The smell of gas was strong southward on Abbott Street and westward along the beach.

SDG&E crews shut off the leak and work resumed at about 8:40.

My story was better, but you beat me to it Jimi!

At approximately 7:20 am on November 4, I was awoken by multiple fire engines and police cars with sirens wailing away. I live right down the street from the source of the commotion. A 4 engine alarm was sounded for a ruptured gas line at the as-yet-unfinished beachfront condominiums on Saratoga and Abbott in Ocean Beach.

I went down towards the source of all the attention and spoke with SDFD Captain Albert Apreciado and he told me, "A landscaping crew was using a bob cat and the shovel went in a little too far and ruptured a 2 inch gas line. Only SDGE can repair that and 911 was activated."

He further stated that, "4 engines and a truck were called out, but we quickly sent two of the engines back and blocked off the streets here, in case of evacuation. When I asked if there was ever a danger of evacuation, he said, "No, never, there was no threat of evacuation. SDGE has stopped it and they will be here another hour or two repairing it."

I saw all the construction workers standing on the corner and I asked one them named Pablo if they were evacuated and he said yes. "At lease we're getting paid while we we're standing around waiting to go back to work," he said.
