Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos presents the Young Lions Series at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue), each week highlighting a rising jazz musician under the age of 25. This week, it’s the Elijah DesToucher Quartet. They start at 7:00, with Castellanos sitting in. $5 cover. Then, Castellanos jets over to Seven Grand Whiskey Bar (3054 University Avenue) for the Latin-jazz jam, featuring Irving Flores, Rob Thorsen, and Mike Holguin. The festivities begin at 9:00 p.m., and musicians are invited to sit in after the first set. No cover, bring your horns!

Castellanos returns to Croce’s Park West with the Park West Ensemble, featuring pianist Joshua White, bassist Dean Hulett, and drummer Brett Sanders. Downbeat is at 7:00, and the cover charge is a modest $5.

The Gonzalo Bergara Quartet perform at Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) with Bergara on guitar, Leah Zeger on violin, Jeffrey Radaich on rhythm guitar, and Brian Netzley on bass. Hot group interplay is promised, and the band hits at 8:00 p.m. $20 cover… Besos de Coco (pictured) are playing at the City Heights Performing Annex (3791 Fairmount Avenue) featuring Lorraine Castellanos on guitar and vocals, Evona Wascinski on double bass, and Claudia Gomez on tap percussion. 7:30-9:00 p.m. No cover, all ages… Trombonist Dave Scott & the New Slide Quartet will be visiting Croce’s Park West, hitting the stage at 7:00 p.m. $5 cover.

Head north to catch the Reka Parker Trio with Parker on piano, Jeff Blanco on bass, and Bob Daniels on drums at Northern Spirits (727 W. San Marcos Boulevard), they’ll be playing from 7:30–10:30 for a cover charge of $5.

Sunday 1
Robin Adler & Mutts of the Planet will perform Joni Mitchell’s Hejira at the Carlsbad Village Theater (2822 State Street) with Dave Blackburn, Jamie Kime, Kevin Hennessy, Danny Campbell, Jeffrey Joe, Sheryl Goodman, Lisa Hightower, and Mo Mullins. The concert begins at 5:00 p.m. $25 at the door… The Ira B. Liss Big Band Jazz Machine celebrates their 35th anniversary at Dizzy’s, featuring vocalist Janet Hammer. Downbeat is at 6:30 p.m. $15 cover.
