Campus Style: Cuyamaca College edition

It's difficult to find people on college campuses that aren’t wearing yoga or sweat pants with their hair swept up in unkempt, sloppy buns. Like most schools, comfort reins supreme on the campus of Cuyamaca College. However, there were a few students that put some effort into their morning wardrobes.

When I ran into 18-year-old Liani Howard outside the campus bookstore, she told me that she tries to have her boyfriend take a photo of her outfit every day to post on her Instagram feed, Wildfreefashion. “I had a blog for a long time that had a following, but I got rid of it because it was old. Now I just use Instagram,” she told me. Howard’s major is undeclared. Right now she is considering between three majors: English literature, drama, or teaching. "I can’t decide,” she told me.

Everything Howard wore was from Pink Zone. "I work there, so I get a discount,” said Howard.

The 18-year-old's favorite wardrobe item is her beige gladiator sandals that feature a pointy toe. Her least favorite trend is when people dress in grunge, “when they know nothing about the trend. I hate when people wear Nirvana or Pink Floyd shirts and they know nothing about the bands. I just don’t like when people try to be something they’re not.”

Nearby, 18-year-old Josephina Torres dressed in head-to-toe black. Torres is a self-proclaimed movie buff. She wore a Darth Vader sweatshirt with faux leather sleeves and a Hunger Games bag.

“My favorite Star Wars character is Chewbacca,” she told me.

She purchased her Hunger Games messenger bag at Toys 'R’ Us. Torres' sweatshirt is from Forever 21 and so are her leggings. Her Doc Martens retail for $129.95 at Nordstrom.

Torres’ favorite wardrobe items are her circle skirts. Her fashion pet peeve is when people wear distressed jeans with too many holes in them. When asked where she sees herself in five years, the 18-year old psychology major said, “Working as a counselor helping children.”

Meanwhile, 19-year-old Angel Durante wore a light-gray beanie, an H&M sweater and a pair of classic, dark, denim Levis with some diamond bling (cubic zirconia ) in his ears. Duarte’s major is Music Engineering.

“In five years I see myself traveling and performing.”

Duarte is a reggaeton singer.

“It’s a Puerto Rican style of music. I’m Mexican singing Puerto Rican music,” he explained with a laugh.

Duarte’s favorite wardrobe items are his Givenchy clothing. His biggest fashion pet peeve is: “When girls wear patterned leggings — like tribal-print ones. I really don’t like it,” he told me.
