No Winnebagos here

Surreptitious storage facility opens for classic wheels

Let’s say you’re concerned that car thieves might steal your 2014 Lamborghini Veneno Roadster that you paid $4.5 million for…or you just want to hide your purchase of a $75,000 classic Chevy from your spouse… Charles Butler, of Rancho Santa Fe, has come to your rescue.

Butler, a home remodeler for upscale neighborhoods in North County, has opened the ultimate vehicle-storage facility. No old Winnebagos or trap-covered fishing boats here. In a new, nondescriptive industrial complex off Palomar Airport Road, on the border of Vista and Carlsbad, Butler has a 17,000-square-foot warehouse — temperature-controlled, with 24/7 video monitoring.

“We pride ourselves on security,” said Ali Moss, the director of marketing.

Known as the Rancho Santa Fe Motor Club, I visited the facility on July 25. I couldn’t find the front door — there is no sign on the building. Fortunately, I saw Moss in the gated parking lot and she buzzed me in after checking my credentials.

For around $500 a month in storage fees, one becomes a “member” and receives use of a VIP lounge and bar. At 2000 square feet, it’s bigger than my house. Members can also use one of three offices, a conference room, and enjoy a stogie in a cigar-smoking area.

Services offered include a weekly starting, checking of fluids and mechanical maintenance, and when ready to pick up for a Sunday drive, a detailing before your arrival.

My attention was drawn to the club as they went public last week, announcing a growing automotive art collection, making the space available for large corporate-type events and parties or shooting car ads.

While now open to the public, appointments are still necessary. Have your ID handy.

Factual footnote: There are only nine 2014 Lamborghini Veneno Roadsters in the world. With a top speed of 220 MPH, the world’s most expensive cars sold for $4.5 million each. One of these Lamborghinis has occasionally been seen in the San Diego area.
