Maybin may have been distracted

Initially, San Diego Padre Cameron Maybin accepted his 25-game suspension for amphetamine use with grace and even gratitude. "I want to assure everyone that this was a genuine effort to treat my condition [of Attention Deficit Disorder] and I was not trying in any way to gain an advantage in my baseball career," he said in a statement. "I understand that I must accept responsibility for this mistake and I will take my punishment and will not challenge my suspension. Frankly, I'm grateful for the time off from a season so horrific that it has nearly killed my love of baseball."

But after suffering repeated attacks from the baseball blogosphere (PadrePillory.com has taken to calling the outfielder "Cameron Maybinge"), Maybin lashed out at a reporter who had been following him around for the better part of a Saturday night, asking questions such as, "Amphetamines? Does this mean you're 'Breaking Bat'?"

"Look," said Maybin. "I have ADD. That means it's hard for me to focus on things. Have you tried to pay attention through an entire Padres game this season? Between the lazy defense and the craptastic hitting, it's damn near impossible, even for someone without ADD. Now imagine being stuck in Petco night after night, watching the same sad parade of hitless wonders wander up to the plate and back down to the dugout. So yeah, I took a medication to help me stay with it. At least I was making an effort."
