Phil’s BBQ upping beer game

Though San Diegans logically think of succulent, sauce-slathered meat at the sounding of the words Phil’s BBQ, the minds behind the business aren’t singularly focused on ‘cue. Phil Pace and company also harbor a devotion to local craft beer. Enough so that the business’ flagship Sports Arena location (3750 Sports Arena Boulevard, Point Loma) closed on December 30 to make grand scale renovations that, in addition to kitchen and refrigeration renovations, includes big changes on the beer service front.

When the location reopens on February 11, it will feature eight new tap handles in the bar area, raising the total number of taps to 16. The handles will be hooked up to craft kegs procured from various breweries throughout San Diego County.

On top of those upgrades, an eight-handle head is being added to the cashier line so dine-in customers will be able to order and be given their beer when ordering their food rather than having to make a second stop at the bar. As anyone who’s ever braved the typically lengthy queue at this popular eatery can attest, the phrase “I need a beer” is quite common, making this one significant upgrade.
