Another venue, made-up term for Modern Times

Does the name “North Park Flavordome” sound good to you? Probably not without a little context, but when one considers it follows in the footsteps of the “Lomaland Fermentorium,” that crazy moniker makes a little more sense. Both of the aforementioned facilities belong to Modern Times Beer (3725 Greenwood Street, Point Loma), which opened midway through 2013 and recently announced plans to open a tasting room at the work-in-progress North Parker building at Upas and 30th Street. No brewing apparatus will be installed. This will simply be a way for the company to expose drinkers to its wares further inland from its Point Loma base of operations.

Coming in at 1,624 square feet, it will feature a pair of glass walls giving way to a view of 30th Street. Sixteen taps will exclusively dispense Modern Times’ beers and, should visitors choose to consume them outside, there will be a pair of al fresco seating areas where they may do so. Adding to the initial appeal of the tasting room are the businesses with which it will co-occupy the North Parker — the second coming of Little Italy’s Underbelly and third iteration of that neighborhood’s Influx Cafe, as well as Mexican spot La Perla.

But Modern Times isn’t blazing any trails with this one. Theirs will actually be the second brewery-free satellite tasting room brought to North Park from a San Diego County brewing company. Belching Beaver Brewery opened such a space last spring, and reports it is doing well. So, it would stand to reason, especially with high quality next-door neighbors, that Modern Times will likewise do well with this model. If there’s one thing North Park residents have proven, if you build it (it being just about anything with food and/or beverage) they will come.
