Trash-pile baby rescued in Tijuana

Only hours old — umbilical cord still attached

Tijuana police on Sunday, August 24, rescued a newborn baby discarded in a pile of trash in Colonia Rojo Gómez, a neighborhood in the far eastern area of the city.

Police were alerted to the baby's plight by an anonymous report to the domestic violence bureau, according to a statement released to the press by the municipal department of public safety.

On arrival, officers discovered the newborn boy in the garbage at a dump at the intersection of Calle Paseo Hacienda Los Laureles and Paseo de Las Águilas Norte.

The abandoned child, estimated to be about six hours old, still had his umbilical cord attached, police said, and appeared to be okay except for being malnourished.

He was taken to Tijuana General Hospital for treatment, police said.

The case was turned over to state authorities for investigation.
