Bassist Kyle Motl explores the music of Anthony Braxton with saxophonist Adam Tinkle, pianist Josh Charney and drummer Putu Hiranmayena, followed by a duet performance with Tobin Chodos on piano at the Loft at UCSD. 4:30 p.m. No cover.

Wednesday 9
Pianist Chihiro Yamanaka lights up Dizzy’s (4275 Mission Bay Drive) with her trio, featuring Yasushi Nakamura on bass and Mark Whitfield on drums. 8 p.m. $20…. Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos leads off his night sitting in with the Young Lions, featuring Kyle Myers at Croce’s Park West (2760 Fifth Avenue) at 7:30 p.m. ($5 cover), before dashing off to his Jazz Jam Session at Seven Grand Whiskey Bar in North Park (3054 University Avenue).

Thursday 10
The Steph Johnson Trio, with Rob Thorsen on bass and Fernando Gomez on drums, are doing their thing at Croce’s Park West. Music begins at 8:30, $5 cover.... ...Helix Jazz Night, featuring the Grossmont College Afro Cuban Ensemble and San Diego Latin Jazz Collective are doing a benefit at the Helix Performing Arts Center (7323 University Avenue) 7 p.m. $10 general admission, $8 seniors, and $5 for students.

L.A. band Kid Songs makes their debut at Dizzy’s. Sunday 13
Start off the day with a jazz brunch at Petrini’s (610 West Ash). The first set begins at 11 a.m. with the duo of Steph Johnson and Rob Thorsen. They are followed by trumpeter Curtis Taylor’s Quartet, featuring Kamau Kenyatta. $25.95 gets you the buffet and all the jazz…. Guitar hero John Scofield and his Uberjam Band play at the Price Center Ballroom East (presented by the Loft). Opening the concert is Mostly Modified Monk with David Borgo, Kyle Motl, and Kevin Higuchi. Tickets are $30 general admission, $15 UCSD students.
