Turban Love

Turbans are making the rounds out and about in San Diego. The fashionable headpieces aren’t only for bad hair days. Fashionistas in SD are taking their cues from the likes of Joan Crawford and Carrie Bradshaw in patterned and solid colored turbans.

Leyda Figueroa wore a patterned turban on a recent visit to the San Diego Zoo. Figueroa reminded me a bit of Erykah Badu circa the early 2000’s.

Figueroa sported floral shorts from Target, a sheer cobalt blue top, a robot pendent, and a thrifted turban. Her elaborate arm tattoo is an ode to Dr. Suess.

“It’s a montage of mine and my son’s favorite books and Dr. Suess charters,” the 26-year-old massage therapist told me. Figueroa likes to do most of her shopping at thrift stores. She is a fan of unique one-of-a-kind items, like her 1980’s color block clutch.

Anastasia Balom

Meanwhile, in Hillcrest I spotted Anastasia Balom in a multi-colored turban while browsing the racks at UO on 5th.

“I work at the Pink and girls come in to the store and want to know where I get [my turbans] and how to tie them,” 26-year-old Balom told me.

Balom was looking for something to wear to the Rock the Bells outdoor music festival in LA for her and her fiancé. She wore a Pac Sun skirt, turban from UCP in Pacific Beach, and a vibrant vintage purse.

Balom's favorite local shopping spots are UCP thrift stores and Thrift Trader.
