Threatened to cut off head of U.S. Rep. Gabbard (D-Hawaii)

Baja California police have captured a U.S. citizen on the lam from the FBI for allegedly threatening to decapitate a congresswoman from Hawaii.

Agents of the fugitive unit of the Policia Estatal Preventiva (State Preventive Police) arrested Aniruddha Sherbow, 43, as he walked along Paseo Ensenada in Playas de Tijuana on Wednesday, August 28.

“Sherbow was turned over to FBI agents in San Diego, California, late yesterday and is scheduled to have his initial court appearance today in San Diego, prior to his eventual return to Washington, D.C., to face the outstanding charge of transmission of threats in interstate commerce,” the FBI said in an August 29 press release. “The alleged threats occurred on August 1 and August 3, 2013, and were deemed credible.”

Although the FBI statement did not provide details of Sherbow’s alleged threats, a story published by the Hawaii Reporter in early August said Sherbow sent an email to U.S. Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, D-Hawaii, in which he threatened to cut off Gabbard’s head.

“I, Aniruddha Sherbow, with the Divine as my witness, do hereby solemnly vow to find Tulsi Gabbard, wheresoever she may be, and to sever her head from her body,” Sherbow allegedly wrote in an email to the congresswoman, according to the Hawaii Reporter.

Acting on a request from U.S. authorities, Baja California state police tracked Sherbow to Playas, the Tijuana daily El Mexicano reported. The newspaper characterized Sherbow as “a terrorist,” a characterization repeated in other newspapers and broadcast media in Mexico, where the arrest was treated as major news.
