Coronado Brewing headed to Imperial Beach

Island brewing company adding another mainland facility

The business may be called Coronado Brewing Company (CBC), but that 17-year-old operation's brewpub roots are now securely fastened to the mainland and spreading fast. It started with CBC brewing at the Mission Brewery Plaza in Five Points several years back before transferring the facility to Acoustic Ales Brewing Experiment. That was followed with the installation of a large-scale brewery complete with a tasting room, storage, and office space in the Knoxville Street cul-de-sac in the Tecolote Canyon area near Bay Park.

Now, CBC is preparing to open a new spot in Imperial Beach, a second brewpub at 875 Seacoast Drive, the site that previously housed Jersey Boys Diner. When asked what motivated an expansion to IB, the company’s owners say they are always turning over rocks to find new places to lay down additional stakes, and made a bid on another property within the municipality awhile back, but lost out on it. Which makes it all the more interesting and fortuitous that this spot became available, a mere four blocks from CBC co-founder Ron Chapman’s home.

The timetable for the brewpub’s opening is set for spring of next year. Once open, it will be a brewery-affixed restaurant with a tasting room component for those who arrive strictly in search of suds. During build-out, the spot will undergo significant changes, including expansion of the patio area. On the brewing side, special beers will be produced specifically for the IB location.

Even as invested as they are in this project, the individuals behind CBC are still keeping an eye out for other places that appear to be a good fit for them to take over. One community president Rick Chapman is particularly interested in is his home neighborhood of Mission Hills. But for now, it’s all about IB.
