Lots of musical tricks and treats for the jazz fan this week. Here are the Reader's top picks:

Tuesday 29
ECM recording artist Lucian Ban makes his debut San Diego appearance at UCSD's Loft. Ban is touring in support of his latest release Transylvanian Concert, a duet with violist Mat Maneri, who unfortunately had to bow out of the gig due to illness. Alto saxophonist Jorge Silvester will sub. Opening the concert is the duo of pianist Anthony Davis and bassist Mark Dresser. Colorado trumpeter Hugh Ragin, originally scheduled to appear, had to cancel at the last minute. Tickets are $12 general public and $6 for students. Show at 8 p.m.

Flutist Holly Hofmann, pianist Mike Wofford, and drummer Duncan Moore will be joined by a bassist TBA at Croce's in the Gaslamp Quarter ( 802 5th Avenue). Cover is $5, waived with an order for dinner. Music begins at 7:30 p.m.

Wednesday 30
Trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos continues the Wednesday Jazz Jam Session at 7 Grand in North Park (3054 University Avenue), with pianist Joshua White, bassist Rob Thorsen, and drummer Kevin Higuchi. No cover. Musicians, bring your instruments! 9:30 p.m.

Thursday 31
Guitarist Jim Storey plays a Halloween gig at 98 Bottles (2400 Kettner Boulevard), with his fusion group Storeylines, featuring Lynn Willard on keyboards, Janet Hammer on vocals, and Gary Nieves on drums. Tickets are $10 at the door. Show at 8 p.m.

Friday 1
NYC musician Evan Ziporyn plays solo clarinet and electronics at Bread & Salt (1955 Julian Avenue, Barrio Logan), as part of Bonnie Wright's Fresh Sound concert series. He will be performing the West Coast premiere of In My Mind & In My Car, as well as music from Shuggie Otis and Joni Mitchell. Tickets are $15 general admission, $10 students. 8 p.m.

Joshua White Quartet at 98 Bottles. White will play Fender Rhodes piano with tenor saxophonist Ben Schachter, bassist Mackenzie Leighton, and drummer Dan Schnelle. Tickets are $15 at the door. 8 p.m.

Saturday 2
Gilbert Castellanos and Willie Jones III salute the music of the legendary Clifford Brown and Max Roach at 98 Bottles, with Joshua White on piano, Hamilton Price on drums, and Brian Clancy on saxophone. Tickets are $20 at the door. 8 p.m.

Josh Weinstein with the G Burns Jug Band at the Loft. Joining the Tom Waits–inspired pianist/vocalist will be guitarist Clinton Davis, fiddler Batya MacAdams-Somer, accordionist Meghann Welsh, tuba player Jonathan Piper, and percussionist Sean Francis Conway. Admission is free! 8 p.m.
