Campus Style at San Diego Mesa College

Stripes have always been in. Your grandmother once rocked stripes and probably still does. They are as much of a wardrobe staple as a crisp white button-down. Whether they are subtle, chunky, thick, pin,zig-zag, horizontal or vertical—every reincarnation of the stripe is in right now.

On the Mesa College campus stripes were everywhere. Most students stuck with the garden variety tried and true horizontal stripe.

Liberal arts major Carmen Farias wore a Forever 21 cropped version of the popular nautical striped t-shirt. Farias is 18 and can get away with a midriff baring tee. Please do not try this at home if you’re over the age of 25. (Notice the student in the foreground in stripes)

Farias donned a pair of red flats from the popular brand Toms. When you buy a pair of Toms, the company donates a pair of shoes to charity.

At $58 a pop for canvas shoes I would hope so.

Gustavo Ramirez wore a classic white and gray striped t-shirt from Tilly's. He paired them with fitted jeans and a simple canvas backpack.

The 18-year-old is studying to be a translator. He speaks English, Italian, German, Spanish, and French.

When I asked Ramirez what his least favorite fashion trend was, his answer was Steezers. I had never heard term before so he elaborated.

"Steezers are guys that wear khaki shorts, snapbacks, plaid shirts, long white socks with vans, and have blonde streaks in their hair." he told me with a shudder.

Apparently he is not alone in his dislike of steezers.

Classical guitar and musical performance major, Kyle Norquist wore a Tilly's pinstripe sweatshirt, Cotton-on jeans, and Toms shoes.

After taking his photo he asked, "Do I look like an idiot?"

I assured him that it is nearly impossible to look like an idiot while carrying a guitar.

"That's true," he agreed.
