Car Show Sunday in San Marcos in its second year

On the first Sunday of each month, from March to October, UPS drivers Steve Sherman and Frank Renteria put the brakes on delivering packages to North County residents and host Car Show Sundays in the rear lot of Old California Restaurant Row in San Marcos from 1 to 5 p.m.

Sherman and Renteria have known each other for 15 years and deliver packages to residents in San Marcos and Escondido, respectively. Renteria teamed with Sherman in helping with the monthly show and calls himself the “logistics guy” for his role in the production.

On May 5, the dreary skies and eventual rain led to a lower turnout than usual, but a Dodge Viper, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Maserati, and Ferrari were among about 50 cars that trickled in and out of the show.

“We have a special lot for exotics,” Sherman said. He said he has a good number of people from the Ferrari clubs and other exotic-car owners who normally attend. Vehicles displayed at the shows include race cars, trucks, low-riders, and classics.

Sherman, 48, said that during his childhood his father was a professional engine-builder and that since age 16 he has been involved in car racing. He has a 900-horsepower 1965 Chevy Nova that he races at Barona Raceway.

He is sponsored by a sports bar located among the nearly 14 acres of eateries that make up Old California Restaurant Row, which prompted his notion to start up the car show.

Car Show Sundays became city-approved in spring of 2012. The designated parking lot holds up to 150 cars and allows for an art show and live music. The shows are free to exhibit at and to attend.
