Gaslight Anthem brings the '59 Sound to Belly Up

"You can tell Gayle if she calls, that I'm famous now for all of these rock and roll songs," sang Brian Fallon. "And even if that's a lie, she should've given me a try," he continued.

The Gaslight Anthem's performance proved singer/songwriter Fallon's deceit to be more truthful than not, as evidenced by the sold-out crowd hanging on every word and singing loudly the lyrics to their favorite songs.

The 22-song set opened with tunes from their 2008 release, including "High Lonesome" and the album’s title track, "The ‘59 Sound." The high-energy performance also featured fan favorites "American Slang," "Great Expectations," "1930," and "Mulholland Drive." Slower tracks were peppered into the set list, showcasing Fallon's vocals on tunes such as: "Mae," "National Anthem," and "Here's Looking at You, Kid," before closing with the hard-rocking "Backseat."

From the first song to the last, the tunes cut through the 600-capacity venue, leading fans to rejoice at the opportunity to see "Gaslight" in such an intimate space, yet bewildered that their anthems are not filling larger arenas worldwide. Those days may not be too far off, so see them now and then say, "I saw them when..."
