Mesa College 32nd Annual Golden Scissors Fashion Show

Mesa College fashion and design students are holding their 32nd annual Golden Scissors fashion show on Friday May 10th, 5:30-9pm at the Sheraton Hotel and Marina.

What sets Golden Scissors apart from other fashion shows is that it is entirely student run event. Students in Mesa’s fashion program, produce, market, organize model calls, and design the garments seen on the runway. It’s an outlet for students to showcase their designs and demonstrate what they have learned in the Mesa College fashion program.

“It’s a top notch show. In the past we’ve had anywhere from 600-800 people in attendence. I’m very proud of them,” says Professor of fashion, Susan Lazear .

Advanced design students, Riley Howlett and Ana Jamtash, will both have their collections featured on the Golden Scissors runway. The designers will showcase 3-5 different looks.

21-year-old Howlett’s collection is a combination of military and streetwear.

“It’s a combination of art and military and how both are for the better good. It’s confinement and deconstruction,” the designer said of his collection.

25-year-old Munthua Tepat’s line was inspired by Elie Saab—the famous Lebanese fashion designer that specializes in elegant formalwear. Tepat’s collection consists of floor-length gowns and intricately detailed dresses.

The Color scheme for Tepat’s collection was pulled from the dress featured on model, Nikki Smith below.

“I pulled the colors from that fabric. All my other pieces are turquois, blue, and fuchsia,” the 25-year old told me.
