3:00 a.m. house fire in Cardiff

A remodel project for years

Neighbors in the 800 block of Nolbey Street in Cardiff awoke early on March 8, as fire trucks arrived at 3:00 a.m. to find a home engulfed in flames.

The two-alarm fire brought out units from Encinitas, Rancho Santa Fe, and Vista.

It took the Encinitas Fire Department two minutes to arrive from the time of the first call. Dedicated last week, a new fire station located across I-5 on Birmingham Drive was the first to respond.

According to fire department spokesman/officer Mike Daigle, the fire was extinguished by 4:00 a.m. By 6:00 a.m. the department was spraying foam on the structure to help the moisture stay in the remaining wood and roof. Nearby roads were reopened and the fire trucks gone by 7:00 a.m.

The owner has been remodeling the single-family home for years. With the exception of the garage, most of the home was damaged. He was not living in the home at the time. A cause had not been determined.
