Rock to roll onto Aldine Drive in Kensington?

During the past two months, Kensington residents have been baffled by the sudden appearance of a large boulder lodged into a slope along Aldine Drive. To add to the mystery, all vegetation was quickly cleared from the slope within one day, leading locals to speculate that the rock was about ready to roll onto Aldine.

Sean Harrison, a chair on the Kensington/Talmadge Planning Committee, answered the mystery of the hanging rock on January 23.

The homeowner up the hill noticed that large sinkholes were forming throughout the backyard and slope behind his house. A crew was hired to remove the thick vegetation to reveal what the problem might be. City street services workers investigated and found that a major street-side drainage pipe, running alongside the home and buried in the slope, had failed. City workers quickly replaced it.

The new drainpipe is routed on the surface and around the rock. The rock was deemed too embedded and enormous to move and poses no danger — although a few residents still think otherwise.
