Earlier this month, the Hillcrest Business Association voted to approve a  new project that will add some sparkle to a block of the community’s streets.

The Uptown News reported that "the project to install a permanent light canopy over University Avenue" will bring 14 strings of “festoon lighting” to the block between Fourth and Fifth avenues.

The idea behind the lights is to help improve the aesthetics of the neighborhood. Lisa Weir, Hillcrest Business Association marketing and communications director, told the Uptown News that "this new beautification effort features LED lights to save energy and costs, and will string bits of twinkle across University Avenue in the heart of Hillcrest.”

The Hillcrest Business Association also noted on their Facebook page that they were wanting to help "enhance the pedestrian experience as we continue to improve the business district."

The lighting installation, which will cost about $50,000, will occur after hours so as not to impede traffic; it is expected to be finished by next summer, ”before [August’s] CityFest 2013,” according to Weir.
