Dizzy's sculpts its new space

Jazz nightspot Dizzy’s has found a new home in the showroom at San Diego Jet Ski Rentals (4275 Mission Bay Drive) in Pacific Beach. The new location has a capacity of 150, will be all-ages, and offers free parking.

Founded by Chuck Perrin, from 2000 to 2007 Dizzy’s was originally located at the Culy Trucking Warehouse in Downtown San Diego, followed by a stint at the San Diego Wine & Culinary Center in the Harbor Towers, from November 2007 to January 2012. “After the SDWCC went out of business last January, I have been a gypsy,” said Perrin. Subsequent concerts have been held at four different spots: 98 Bottles, McCrea Music, Tango Del Rey, and the Cosmopolitan Hotel in Old Town.

Perrin plans to continue the same booking policy as the previous locations. “I’ll continue to focus on supporting the local jazz community,” he said. The new venue debuted on October 13 with a show from Mikan Zlatkovich. Perrin says he is not averse to booking shows at other venues. “Sure, if the vibe fits and the performers prefer a 21-and-up beer/wine/food milieu,” he remarked.

Perrin admits this new location might be considered a little unusual for live music. “Ever since the original warehouse location down by the ballpark closed, I have been searching for a space with the proper vibe,” he said. “After months of searching and...finally leaving myself open to the value of spontaneity and inspiration, I found it. I live in the neighborhood and, driving by one day, I looked over and saw the space and it just hit me.”

He points out that the new location is still a work-in-progress. “When I first saw the room, I knew immediately it would sound great,” he said. “There’s some work to be done to sculpt the raw space, which will take time, but I envision that it will be very satisfying for everyone.”
