Road Open through Border Field State Park

The road to the beach through Border Field State Park is open this weekend from 9:30 a.m to 7 p.m..

This is only the second time this year Monument Road (accessible via Hollister Street and Dairy Mart Road) has been open all the way to the beach.

Having the 1.25-mile-long road open means a rare chance for visitors to skip the long walk from the state park parking lot and head straight to some of the best views in the park, including from Monument Mesa. This winter, State Parks spent about $250,000 to renovate the picnic area atop the mesa so it now has a shaded area for groups.

Be sure to bring some ID, as the park's southern boundary is the U.S.-Mexican border and the park is patrolled by the U.S. Border Patrol. Patrol agents may stop and check to make sure your purpose there is lawful — they routinely catch people trying to cross illegally through the park.
