The victims, believed to have been patrons of the library (located one half block to the west), were walking eastbound across Ninth Avenue. A vehicle traveling eastbound on E made a left turn onto Ninth and struck both women. They were transported to the hospital by ambulance for treatment of their injuries, which were not thought to be serious.

Although numerous people were present on the sidewalks surrounding the library and the downtown branch of the post office across E Street, nobody claimed to have seen the collision or whether the traffic signal was red or green, so the driver of the automobile was not cited.
