Bonnie Dumanis Asked to Not Deliver Speech at City College

In recognition of Constitution Week, district attorney and mayoral candidate Bonnie Dumanis was scheduled to speak at City College’s Saville Theatre on Wednesday, September 21. However, because of the Diana Gonzalez case — in which Gonzalez, a 19-year-old mother, was killed in a City College restroom last October — activists expressed a desire for Dumanis not to show.

Social justice activists feel strongly that Dumanis’s office failed to prosecute and jail Gonzalez’s ex-husband — Armando Perez, the murder suspect — for abusing her prior to the murder. Students, friends, activists, and the Not Dumanis Facebook group were planning to ask the D.A. questions about the Gonzalez case that they feel were never thoroughly answered.

Students received news on Monday, September 19, that Dumanis was canceling her on-campus appearance.

Lacey Dorman, who was helping to organize a Dumanis protest, posted a Facebook message: "Thank you everyone for your support! Today we received amazing news...DA Bonnie Dumanis has canceled her appearance at City College:) We are so proud of the students, faculty, staff and community members who called her office over and over again asking her not to come!”

Instead of Dumanis’s speech, “an open forum on domestic violence and Diana's case" will take place at the Saville Theater on September 21, from 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., according to the Not Dumanis facebook page.
