Tijuana Prepares for Independence Day

A common sight on the calles and avenidas in recent weeks has been the vendors of all things Mexican. Red, white, and green flags, pinwheels, banners, and bunting adorn buildings, balconies, and shop windows. All this in preparation for Mexican independence day, which is coming up on September 16.

Every year, starting in the last weeks of August, vendors wheel their carts loaded with the holiday merchandise from neighborhood to neighborhood. Bars, saloons, and dancehalls in the Zona Norte play up the decoration of their establishments, hoping to attract customers. A dozen or so vendors have been canvassing Zona Centro and the Zona Norte.

The eve of September 15 will be marked by the reading of the Mexican declaration of independence in various locales around Mexico; and then the fireworks, which ought to be visible from some parts of San Diego.
